Global Volunteers, a private nonprofit, nonsectarian international local development organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota, is in its 25th year of service worldwide. Founded in 1984, Global Volunteers strives to wage peace throughout the world by helping to establish mutual understanding between people of diverse cultures through short-term volunteers.
Each year, Global Volunteers coordinates up to 200 teams of volunteers who contribute to long-term human and economic development projects. From all backgrounds, and of all ages, our volunteers become "servant-learners," working with and learning from people worldwide. Programs are offered in Australia, Brazil, China, the Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Northern Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South America, Tanzania, Vietnam and the United States.
The work projects, which are determined by the host communities and directed by local leaders, include teaching conversational English or business skills, caring for children, assisting with health care, building community facilities such as schools and community centers, painting and repairing homes and assisting on natural resource projects. Volunteers generously contribute their time and skills, paying all program-related costs.
